Trail Planning FAQ / Wind, elevation, canopy
Wind, elevation, canopy
Which direction is easiest to ride?
For a one-way ride, I usually favor Council Grove toward Osawatomie by overall elevation, but there is a long climb toward Bushong at the beginning. A strong easterly wind can overturn that preference.
Flint Hills Trail — Council Grove ↔ Bushong
Bushong → Council Grove is generally easier by elevation. Council Grove → Bushong climbs subtly over miles, with striking open tallgrass prairie views. Its estimated canopy presence is about 10%, so exposure to wind is part of the experience.
Flint Hills Trail — Bushong ↔ Ottawa
Bushong → Ottawa has the clearer net downhill advantage. This beautiful, changing stretch includes open countryside, farm fields, towns, and intermittent tree-lined sections near waterways. Canopy presence is estimated around 17%; check the wind in exposed stretches.
Flint Hills Trail — Ottawa ↔ Osawatomie
Ottawa → Osawatomie drops slightly, but this is the most wind-dependent section. The route trends southeast and a southerly wind may favor riders going the other way. Frequent wooded corridors, river scenery and small bluffs make this a wonderfully sheltered ride in places. Estimated canopy presence: 54%.
Prairie Spirit Trail
With typical warm-season southerly winds, I often favor Iola → Ottawa, while paying attention to the actual forecast. There are long gentle grades around Colony that loaded riders can feel. Alternating tree-lined and open sections make for lovely variety. Estimated canopy presence: about 26%.
Southwind Rail Trail
Humboldt → Iola is often a little more favorable by elevation and southerly wind. The short route is enjoyable either way, through a mix of green corridors and countryside. Estimated canopy presence: about 25%; trees beside the trail can help break the wind even without a full overhead canopy.
