Trail Planning FAQ / Camping & lodging
Camping & lodging
Where should I stay overnight?
I pick an overnight destination with confirmed accommodations first, then adjust daily mileage. The easiest terrain direction is not always the best logistical direction.
Flint Hills Trail
Council Grove and Ottawa are useful anchor towns. For the long middle portion, explore available options around Allen, Osage City and the Vassar/Pomona area, along with other listed businesses. Small towns including Bushong can have very limited services, so I would confirm a specific place before building an itinerary around it.
Prairie Spirit Trail
Ottawa, Garnett and Iola are natural towns to investigate when dividing this trail into rideable days. Garnett's location makes it useful for many itineraries, but lodging and camping availability must be checked directly.
Southwind Rail Trail
Iola and Humboldt are the most practical places to investigate for overnight arrangements, particularly when connecting Southwind to Prairie Spirit.
A practical rule
A trailhead or picnic stop is not automatically an authorized campsite. Verify permission, prices, reservations, travel distance off trail and check-in times.
