Trail Planning FAQ / Out-and-back planning
Out-and-back planning
Which way gives me an easier return trip?
If I want my return to feel easier, I try to ride uphill or into the forecast headwind first, leaving a potential downhill or tailwind for the way home. The wind can change during a ride.
Flint Hills Trail
For the full trail's overall grades, starting toward the west from Osawatomie would put more climbing on the outward leg, with a generally downhill trip back east. On Council Grove ↔ Bushong specifically, start in Council Grove and climb toward Bushong first. For Bushong ↔ Ottawa, start from Ottawa and ride west first. Ottawa ↔ Osawatomie has less elevation difference, so forecast wind should help determine which way to start.
Prairie Spirit Trail
When a southerly wind is forecast to persist, starting in Ottawa and heading south first can mean a helpful tailwind heading north later. Choose a realistic turnaround point, and keep the slow climbs around Colony in mind.
Southwind Rail Trail
With a southerly breeze, beginning in Iola and riding toward Humboldt first can set up an easier northbound return. This trail is short enough that either choice can be a relaxing outing.
