Gear & surface

What bicycle and tires work best?

You can ride these trails on just about any bicycle, including road bikes. You do not need an expensive gravel bike or special equipment to enjoy them. That said, I would recommend wider tires for comfort and confidence on crushed limestone, especially over longer distances.

Tires and surfaces

These trails are not reserved for gravel bikes. People can enjoy them on road bikes, hybrids, touring bikes, mountain bikes, and all kinds of other bicycles. On a dry, firm surface, even relatively narrow tires may roll along just fine. But crushed limestone is not always as smooth or firm as pavement. Loose spots, occasional ruts, and sections softened by rain can make narrow tires less comfortable and harder to control.

If someone asks what I would recommend, I would say about 35 mm or wider is a comfortable starting point for many riders, not a minimum requirement. Wider tires can offer a smoother ride and more confidence on loose surfaces, particularly with camping gear. Some portions of Prairie Spirit are paved, and trail conditions vary by section and weather.

My advice: Ride the bike you already have if it is in good working order and suited to the conditions. You do not have to buy a different bicycle just to experience these wonderful trails.

Loaded riding

Test your bike with all your bags before departure. Long gentle climbs can feel noticeably harder with camping gear, especially when there's a headwind.

After rain

Wet limestone may slow rolling and make tires or drivetrain dirty. Give yourself extra time and check conditions; the same trail can feel quite different a day or two later.
